Attorney Admission Procedures

APPLICANT INFORMATION

Requirements and Application Process:

Attorneys seeking to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia must be active members in good standing with the Georgia State Bar.  All attorneys seeking admission are required to submit a Petition for Bar Admission and must have two sponsoring attorneys sign their petition.  Sponsoring attorneys must be members in good standing with the Georgia State Bar and the Bar of the Southern District of Georgia.

The Southern District of Georgia has three divisional locations (Savannah, Brunswick, and Augusta) for attorney admissions to the bar.  Attorneys seeking admission to the Bar of the Southern District of Georgia must attend an Attorney Admission Ceremony in one of the Court’s divisional locations. Please reference the instructions below for guidance on each division’s requirements.

An attorney is eligible to practice in the Southern District of Georgia only when the Petition for Bar Admission is fully executed (click here for Attorney form), the fees are paid (Click here for a listing of court fees), the attorney signs the Court’s roll book, and the attorney is sworn in by a judicial officer conducting an Attorney Admissions Ceremony.

Savannah

Attorney admissions ceremonies will be held in the Savannah Division on a quarterly basis, and ceremony dates will be published each year.  The currently scheduled Savannah Attorney Admissions Ceremony dates are:

Upon completion of the Petition for Bar Admission, please email it, along with your preferred ceremony date to:

attyadmissionssavannah@gas.uscourts.gov

You will receive a confirmation email indicating that you have been included in the next ceremony (or other date if you have indicated) along with any other instructions.  All petitions must be received at least one week prior to the ceremony date.  For Savannah Attorney Admissions Ceremonies, sponsoring attorneys are welcome to attend, but are not required to attend your scheduled ceremony.

Brunswick

Please contact Ms. Kim Kroscavage with the Gilbert Harrell Law Firm for attorney swearing ins. Her contact number is 912-265-6700.

Augusta

Attorney admissions ceremonies are held every 6-8 weeks depending on the number of applicants.  Once your original, properly executed petition has been received, you will be notified via email of the ceremony.  Please bring a check payable to the Clerk, U.S. District Court to the admissions ceremony.

All attorneys requesting admission in the Augusta Division must attend a scheduled ceremony and must be presented to the Court by an attorney currently admitted and in good standing.  There will be no “special swearing-in ceremonies”.

Please mail the original completed petition with cover letter to:
